Dragons 21-27 Pau: Last-gasp disallowed try denies Dragons victory

This could prove to be a costly home defeat for Dragons RFC who squandered a late chance to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Pau.

The Welsh club were trailing by six points when the clock turned red but Pau's indiscipline meant they still had hope. After Sacha Zegueur was sent to the sin bin for illegally sacking a maul the Dragons proceeded to lay siege to the Pau line.

They thought they had won it when Max Clark powered over the line. Originally, the referee awarded the try but it was disallowed by the television match official with replays confirming the former Bath centre had been held up.

But they had one final chance. They did all the hard work with a beautiful pass from JJ Hanrahan unlocking the Pau defence only for Sio Tomkinson to spill the ball forward with the try line at his mercy.

This was a big setback for the Dragons who are now facing an uphill battle to reach the knockout stages of the Challenge Cup. In all honesty they got what they deserved and were far too inaccurate and ill-disciplined to come out on top against the gritty French club who were far from full-strength.

The first-half was a scrappy affair with the Dragons struggling to brush a gutsy Pau side off their coattails. Sam Davies kicked them into an early lead before Clovis Lebail levelled the scores from the kicking tee.

The hosts got let off the hook early doors after Irish wing Eoghan Barrett touched down but the try was ruled out by the television match official for offside.

Finally, the Dragons gained a foothold in this game with the penalties mounting up against Pau which allowed Davies to kick a further two penalties. Wales hooker Bradley Roberts was outstanding with his dynamic carrying getting them on the front foot.
