Dover Athletic manager Jake Leberl reacts to 5-2 National League South defeat to Eastbourne Borough in the free-entry fixture that attracts attendance of 4,227 at Crabble

Dover boss Jake Leberl felt Eastbourne Borough wanted the win more than his side - but was unhappy with those who booed his team off at the full-time whistle - on Saturday.

Two penalties from striker Pemi Aderoju put the visitors 2-0 ahead by half-time in front of a crowd of 4,227 at Crabble.

Dover defender Jalen Jones put through his own net and, although midfielder George Wilkinson pulled one back, two further away goals ended the contest.

Substitute Kenny Coker also got in the act for Whites while Eastbourne’s Freddie Carter was sent off, too, but the free-entry National League South fixture finished 5-2 to Tommy Widdrington’s team.

“Eastbourne were very strong,” said Leberl. “I felt, coming into it, we were potentially catching them at the wrong time.

“Obviously, they have got a really experienced manager, who has come in from Aldershot.

“He won the FA Trophy with them, didn’t he? He has got a really good squad.

“Obviously, they’re massively underachieving. They were up and around the play-offs last year so we knew that it was going to be a tough game.

“I said to the boys beforehand that they’re in a false league position and it was going to be tough.”

The result ended a four-game winning league run for Leberl’s men while was a much-needed victory for the relegation-threatened Sussex side, who previously had lost eight of 11 fixtures, but appear much-improved under Widdrington.

Leberl continued: “I’m just really disappointed with how we started the game. We have started a lot of games sloppily.

“We have given away two penalties to go in 2-0 down at half-time. The boys felt they were a little bit harsh but I can see why the referee has given them and, to be honest, we deserved to be 2-0 down.
