Donny van de Beek joins Eintracht Frankfurt on loan as Manchester United set to make £25m loss

Manchester United playmaker Donny van de Beek has joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

Eintracht have paid United a minimal loan fee and are covering the majority of Van de Beek's £125,000-a-week wages. Eintracht have the option to buy Van de Beek, 26, for €11million (£9.55m), with €3m (£2.6m) in add-ons.

The move is the second loan for Van de Beek during his time at United after he spent a forgettable five months with Everton two years ago.

Van de Beek has played 62 times for United and scored only two goals. He has had only 19 minutes of playing time this season and it is approaching three years since he last figured for the Netherlands national team.

United signed Van de Beek from Ajax in September 2020 for £35m rising to £40m. Should Eintracht sign Van de Beek permanently, he will represent a loss of £25.45m for United.

Eintracht sports director Markus Krösche said: “Donny van de Beek fits our game idea perfectly and is an important piece of the puzzle for our team.

"He brings a wealth of international experience that our young players will benefit from. Donny exudes a goal-scoring threat and, above all, should put our attackers in promising positions.”

The Dutchman started in only six Premier League games for United - two of them in heavily-rotated teams as they prioritised the Europa League final in the 2020-21 run-in.

Van de Beek ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in January last year and spent six months on the sidelines.

United bought Van de Beek when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the manager. Solskjaer's preferred targets were Jack Grealish
