'Don't lie!' - Michail Antonio jokes Callum Wilson is happy Newcastle United man is yet to score

Michail Antonio has joked Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is pleased to see his team-mate Chris Wood struggling for goals while the team keeps winning. Wood has yet to get off the mark for the Magpies since joining from Burnley in a deal worth around £25 million.

Eddie Howe was desperate to recruit a striker in the January window after Wilson suffered a very serious calf injury in the December draw with Manchester United. It is, as of yet, unclear when Wilson will return for Newcastle meaning Wood is set to be handed an extended stay in the starting XI.

In the latest episode of the Footballers Football Podcast, Wilson claimed that he is desperate for Wood to get in amongst the goals soon in order to help the team. His co-host Antonio, though, was having none of that, as he joked that Wilson would secretly prefer to see Wood continue fail in front of goal as long as Newcastle keep winning.

Wilson said: “I am just rooting for Woody, being in the striker’s union, to get himself off the mark as soon as possible.”

But the West Ham forward laughed off that claim, as he responded: “Don’t lie, mate. Don’t lie. Why are you lying, bruv? Your team is winning games. You are unbeaten in seven. Your striker that has come in for you hasn’t scored any goals, but you are winning games. Don’t lie!

“You want your team to keep winning. The striker has come in, but you want to come back in and get your place. You don’t want him banging, so when you come back, then you have to sit on the sidelines. I hear what you are saying. You feel bad for the guy. But it’s your job and you want to come back and take your job back.”

Wilson disputed that claim: “I am not agreeing to this. I want Woody to score goals. That’s all that matters.
