Dmitry Bivol teases move to super middleweight for Canelo Alvarez rematch

WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol has hinted at a possible rematch with Canelo Alvarez at super middleweight.

Last Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena, Dmitry Bivol put on an absolute clinic as he tore through Canelo Alvarez with a strong unanimous decision win. The victory took his pro boxing record to 20-0 and handed Canelo just his second professional loss, with the first coming at the hands of Floyd Mayweather.

Bivol, 31, retained his WBA light heavyweight crown in the process, with many also wondering whether or not a win like this vaults him into pound-for-pound contention.

The man himself has rejected such an idea for now but if he was to defeat the Mexican sensation a second time, that could change the conversation in a big way.

As per Bivol after the fight, it’s not unthinkable that he could actually drop down to 168 pounds in order to collide with his foe once again.

“I think he wants [the rematch],” Bivol said. “He’s a guy who loves challenge. We see it, he has belts in four divisions. I think a guy like him wants a rematch.”

“Maybe I could make [168, but] only for four belts,” Bivol said. “I have to think about it. I think we all have to think about it. Not only me. His team. We have [to have] negotiations.”

The immediate rematch is definitely on the table with Canelo making it crystal clear that he isn’t going to back down from the Russian. At the same time, the challenger is all about making history – and defending the belts he’s already won at super middleweight doesn’t sound like something that’d be as interesting as claiming a different strap at a different weight class.
