Diogo Dalot explains why he has a strong bond with Man United fans after struggles

Diogo Dalot believes he has developed a strong bond with the Manchester United fans during his time at the club. The 25-year-old joined United from Porto for £19million in June 2018 and has emerged as one of their most consistent performers over the last couple of years.

He made 23 appearances in his first season at Old Trafford before struggling for game time in his second following Aaron Wan-Bissaka's move to Manchester. Dalot spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at AC Milan before returning to United and cementing his name in the starting XI.

Last season, Dalot started in all but three Premier League matches for United. As a reward for some consistent performances, the Portugal international was named their Players' Player of the Year for 2023/24. He has begun this campaign in the same fashion, albeit playing as a left-back.

Although United have not had the results they might have been hoping for - winning just three of their opening 10 matches - Dalot's steady performances have endeared him to the supporters. And he thinks his dedication and commitment as a player has helped him build that relationship with the United fans.

"I think it's something that comes when you’ve been with a club for so long," he told the club website. "You start looking at the club a bit more than just as a player; than just something that you’re working for. And that’s the way that I like to approach things.

"Try to know how the fans would feel, how they feel, what they feel for the club, what they know about the club - these are things that I've always tried to know and to feel since I arrived.
