Dimitar Berbatov explains transfer decision as Manchester United icon shares Erik ten Hag verdict

Manchester United are now less than 24 hours away from hosting Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag's side have enjoyed a relatively positive week in the build up, beating FC Copenhagen on Tuesday and going into the 191st Manchester derby with some momentum. They will hope to welcome Casemiro back for the clash, with the Brazilian facing a race against time to be fit following an injury picked up on international duty.

United have also been boosted by news of Aaron Wan-Bissaka's return to training earlier this week. The right-back has been out of action for six weeks, however, and is not expected to be available for the derby.

Ahead of the game, former United defender Jaap Stam has shared his verdict on United boss Ten Hag, while Dimitar Berbatov has spoken about his time at the club.

Stam shares Ten Hag verdict

Jaap Stam says Erik ten Hag has struggled to instil a style of play at Manchester United, adding that players bought for big fees are yet to live up to their price tag.

The former United defender hailed his countryman as a “good manager” and says Sunday’s derby is an opportunity to bolster confidence in the squad after a shaky start, but suggested that the United boss needs to make better choices.

The Reds have won their last three matches in all competitions, albeit hardly convincingly. United were expected to beat Brentford, Sheffield United and Copenhagen but only managed one-goal margins amid late drama.

Stam says Ten Hag showed his credentials at Ajax but has been unable to get United players to fully carry out his style of play yet, and needs time.
