'Desperate to do it' - Eddie Howe makes Manchester United revenge admission

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has admitted to being desperate to put right the Carabao Cup final defeat when facing Manchester United again in the Premier League.

The two teams met at Wembley two months ago in Newcastle's first cup final this century. The North East side were also out to end a trophy drought which stretches back to 1955. First-half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford meant United lifted the season's first silverware.

Both clubs remain in contention for Champions League qualification via the Premier League ahead of their meeting at St James' Park. Howe insists his side have added motivation to right the wrongs of Wembley.

“Whenever you come close to doing something but don’t ultimately get over the line, it only intensifies your motivations and desires to achieve that,“ the Newcastle boss said. “I’m desperate to do it for everyone connected with the club.

“There was disappointment. I’ve had many in my career. There was a moment where that night I ended up watching the game back, and you’re just looking for what we could have done differently.

“How could we have won that game, and that’s a normal process for when we don’t achieve what we want. Natural disappointment but quickly focus on the next challenge.”
