Deontay Wilder backed to make boxing return this year in first fight since losing to Tyson Fury

Deontay Wilder may be ‘enjoying life’ right now but he is expected to make a boxing return before the end of the year – his first fight since losing to Tyson Fury.

The American boxer, nicknamed the Bronze Bomber, lost his rematch with Fury, 33, in 2020.

The pair then met once again a year later in Las Vegas for a trilogy fight which Fury, who is also known as the Gypsy King, won by eleventh-round knockout.

Wilder has gone AWOL since then but according to WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, a comeback could be on the cards.

Sulaiman told Sky Sports: “He’s taking it easy, he’s weighing up his plans for the future, he had a very busy reign as a champion, two knockout losses to Fury, difficult but he’s matured and he’s doing very well.

“He’s having a good time with his wife, he’s enjoying life but I’m sure he’ll be back.

“He’s one of those fighters that you rarely see in the ring that has the ability to knock somebody out with one punch and he has had many exciting fights. He’s a great fighter and great person.”

Wilder has been called out by Dillian Whyte after the latter lost to Fury at Wembley on Saturday.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Whyte said: “I still want to fight the best.

“Listen, win, lose or draw on Saturday, I would have a few more fights against the best guys and then retire. I still want to do the same thing. Nothing has changed.

“I don’t know what Wilder is doing. I just need to come back and I want to fight everyone I lost to again and try to avenge my losses.

“One hundred per cent [I can win a world title]. Even he [Fury] himself said it, I will be world champion one day, so let’s see.

We’ve got to wait and see. Opportunities are still there. I’m still one of the best fighters around.
