Delta Queens, Rivers Angels in good start, Gov. Oborevwori donates N18m prize money

The 2022/2023 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Super Six, began in Asaba, Delta State, yesterday, with the host, Delta Queens and Rivers Angels recording victories.

While Delta Queens defeated hard-fighting Conference Queens of Lokoja 3-1, Rivers Angels were 2-0 better than FC Robo of Lagos State.

The NWFL Super Six contest, holding at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, began amidst heavy downpours, which made the playing turf of the complex to be slippery. The bad weather condition notwithstanding, Rivers Angels showed class in the first match of the day by pipping FC Robo 2-0 to pick the three points at stake.

The second match of the day was more entertaining, as Delta Queens brushed aside the challenges from Confluence Queens to win 3-1.

Meanwhile, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has donated the sum of N18m as prize monies for winners of this year’s NWFL Super Six.

The winner will take home a cash prize of N10 million, while the second-placed team will smile to the bank with a cash prize of N5million. The 3rd placed team will receive N3 million.

Among top officials present at the opening day of the NWFL Super Six contest, yesterday, were the chairman, Delta Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa, former Delta Sports Commissioner, now Vice President, Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) Solomon Ogba, President, Aquatic Federation of Nigeria, Chinoye Dafi-Aliu and former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje.

The name of the eventual champions of the 2022/2023 NWFL Premiership season will be sent to the secretariat of the Confederation of African Football in Cairo, Egypt, latest on June 12, which is the deadline for registration of clubs for CAF Women’s Champions League.
