Delta Queens attribute FA Cup success to cash motivation

Delta Queens celebrate their League title last year

Delta Queens FC have said their victory over Fortress Queens of Edo State in the ongoing Federations Cup is down to the recent cash motivation by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Delta Queens failed to qualify for this year’s Super Six following a series of bad results, which some of the players blamed on low financial motivation. The Asaba-based team was the defending champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL).

To avoid a similar scenario in the FA Cup, Governor Oborevwori, last week, ordered the immediate payment of four months’ salary to the players and six months to their male counterparts, Warri Wolves.

Meanwhile, Warri Wolves have scaled into the round of 32 in the Federation Cup, where they will face Kwara United in Enugu. Also, on Wednesday evening, Delta Queens defeated Fortress Queens 2-1 in Akure to progress to the round of 16.

Speaking to The Guardian, Delta Queens’ Assistant Captain, Chisom Henry, said the team is determined to do the state proud in the FA Cup.

“We did everything possible to be in the Super Six to defend our title but we lost out. Now, our morale is high and our focus is to win the FA Cup for the governor and people of Delta State. I must also commend the newly appointed Director General of Delta Sports Commission, Mr. Festus Owhojero for his morale support for the team,” she stated.

Goals from Alaba Olabiyi and Chinwe Ababike gave Delta Queens victory in Akure on Wednesday.
