Delta, Lagos, Bayelsa, Edo athletes in gold rush

A 12-year-old gymnast from Delta State, Oguecukwu Stephanie Onusiruika, became the cynosure of all eyes, yesterday, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, where she cleared four gold medals on day-two of the ongoing Seventh National Youth Games.

The young Onusiriuka won all gold medals at stake in the Vault (12.10), Beam (6.50), Floor (8.50) to emerged the Best All Over in the gymnastic event yesterday. At her first appearance in the NYG in Ilorin in 2019, the young athlete got a bronze medal in the Vault event.

Also yesterday, Lagos State dominated the weightlifting event, with Florence Olarinoye winning three gold medals.
Olarinoye showed why her experience in the 45kg women’s class at the 2022 National Sports Festival (NSF) counted, as she scooped all three gold medals for team Lagos in the 49kg female class.

The 12-year-old Florence Olarinoyewon bronze in 45kg class at the 2022 National Sports Festival, NSF also hosted in Asaba in December last year. She lifted 56kg in snatch and had an impressive 72kg lift in clean and jerk, totaling 128kg to win the medals. 

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), got all the silver medals after Chidirim Marvelous Ibeh lifted 53kg in snatch, 67kg clean and jerk and 120kg in total. 

Bayelsa State went home with all the three bronze medals courtesy of Christianah Adefemi. She lifted 48kg in snatch, 65kg in clean and jerk and 104kg in total to place 3rd on the podium.

In the swimming event, yesterday, Destiny Aduaye of Delta State won gold after clocking 3’04:11 to beat Lagos and Bayelsa to second and third place in the 200m girls’ medley event.

In cycling, Osaretin Godwin of Edo state got the gold medal.
