"Definitely the number one target" - Journalist now drops Arsenal striker signing claim

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has identified Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus as his ‘number one target’ ahead of a potential summer rebuild at the Emirates Stadium, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

Alexandre Lacazette is set to leave the Gunners when his contract expires in a matter of weeks, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang departed by mutual consent in February, so the north Londoners could be light on attacking options unless a new frontman is drafting in during the upcoming transfer window.

Arsenal missed out on a return to Champions League football by a two-point margin last season and it appears Arteta has set his sights on plucking Jesus from Manchester City in order to make his side more potent.

The Gunners are understood to be increasingly confident of sealing the deal thanks to positive negotiations taking place behind the scenes.

It seems Jesus has been on Arsenal’s radar for a prolonged period of time as technical director Edu has reportedly been locked in discussions with the 25-year-old’s representatives for a number of months and he is thought to be open to the prospect of a move to the Emirates Stadium.

However, the Gunners are facing competition from north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of a deal.

Jesus will shortly enter the final 12 months of his £91,000-per-week contract at Manchester City, potentially increasing the possibility of a transfer being in the offing.
