"Definitely a player of interest" - Transfer insider now drops exciting Liverpool claim

Liverpool are “definitely” interested in signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Uruguayan has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool’s rivals Manchester United, but Jones says the Reds are also keen on him.

At the end of May, talkSPORT reported that United are pursuing a deal to sign Nunez this summer.

According to them, the 22-year-old is expected to cost £68m after his impressive 2021/22 campaign with Benfica.

However, if reports from Portugal are to be believed, United, Liverpool or anyone else interested in signing Nunez in the transfer window could end up having to pay way more than that.

Prior to talkSPORT’s story, Record claimed that Benfica would actually ask for €100M (£85m), so this could be a very expensive deal to do.

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that there is interest from Liverpool, but the numbers could be a problem for the Merseyside club.

Speaking to GMS, the transfer insider said: “Liverpool are having to explore options at the moment. Darwin Nunez is definitely a player of interest to them, but he is expensive, probably more expensive than they were planning to go at this point.”

Liverpool could be set to lose a lot of firepower, with Sadio Mane firmly on the radar of German giants Bayern Munich.

Nunez, albeit not a wide forward like Mane, would add it back. And journalist Pete O’Rourke recently told GMS that he can indeed see Jurgen Klopp signing a more natural No.9 to replace the Senegal international.

In the season that has just passed, Nunez scored 34 goals in all competitions, registering twice against Liverpool in the Champions League.
