Dean Jones says Hojbjerg ‘isn’t going’ to Newcastle

Newcastle United aren’t short of central midfielders with Isaac Hayden, Joe Willock, Jonjo Shelvey, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, but Eddie Howe has been without Hayden since December 2021, Guimaraes prefers a more advanced midfield role and Joelinton has returned to the attack, so the Magpies could do with a defensive-minded player in the engine room.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was identified as a potential option and pundits believed him to be a good addition, but Dean Jones says a deal isn’t on the cards this summer.

Read Newcastle questioned whether Tottenham would let the 26-year-old leave as he’s a regular under Antonio Conte and contracted until 2025, so it appears the Magpies will have to turn their attentions elsewhere.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “I’m told that Hojbjerg isn’t going to Newcastle, they aren’t interested in him.” The Danish international has made 97 appearances in all competitions for Spurs since joining on a five-year deal from Southampton in 2020, scoring five goals with nine assists.

Hojbjerg is adept at turning over possession and doesn’t give away the ball cheaply, so he’d be perfect sitting in front of the defence. Sadly, Newcastle don’t appear interested, so Howe must have another player in mind.  

In other news, Newcastle signing Renan Lodi over Matt Targett would make no sense
