Dean Henderson transfer latest: Man Utd offered surprise Premier League player in swap deal

Manchester United will reportedly be offered a surprise name as Newcastle look to engineer a swap deal with the Red Devils for Dean Henderson.

Henderson was hoping to usurp David de Gea as Manchester United’s number one last season after a great two-year spell with Sheffield United. He made 26 appearances in all competitions during 2020-21 and finished the campaign well.

But de Gea has got his starting spot back this term. The Spaniard has gone on to be one of the more reliable Manchester United players – alongside Cristiano Ronaldo – amid a dismal season. de Gea’s form meant Henderson only made three appearances in 2021-22.

The 25-year-old is eager to become a regular starter so he can make it into the England squad for this year’s World Cup.

Clearly, this is unlikely to happen if he remains at Old Trafford. As such, Henderson appears set to complete a summer move.

Reports claim newly-promoted Bournemouth and Fulham are battling to sign him. But it is Newcastle who are at the front of the queue.

Eddie Howe can already rely on Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow in goal. However, he wants to improve the position by taking Henderson to St James’ Park, as per The Sun.

And their report claims the Magpies are even willing to offer Darlow to United as part of a player-plus-cash deal.

Erik ten Hag would need a new shot-stopper if Henderson left for the north east. So Newcastle hope to push the transfer through by offering Darlow in return.

The 31-year-old would move to United as de Gea’s backup, presumably ahead of Tom Heaton in the pecking order.

While Darlow wouldn’t play for the Red Devils often, it is an ambitious plan for Newcastle to come up with.

Darlow isn’t on Henderson’s level and only featured eight times for Newcastle
