David de Gea suggested as Manuel Neuer replacement at Bayern Munich after Manchester United release

Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has urged David de Gea to make the switch to the German champions after his release by Manchester United.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper is a free agent this summer after his contract at United expired after 12 years at Old Trafford. He left the Reds with almost 550 appearances for the club under his belt.

Signed in 2011 by Sir Alex Ferguson from Atletico Madrid, De won the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups and the Europa League in his time at United. However, he is now seeking a new club after being released by Erik ten Hag.

United have replaced De Gea with Andre Onana from Inter Milan and the Spaniard is still on the search for a new club. Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich could be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper this summer. Manuel Neuer has a year left on his deal at the Allianz Arena and there is the potential a replacement could be needed should he move on.

Bayern legend Matthaus has urged his old side to move for De Gea and for the goalkeeper to make the move to Germany for his own career. Matthaus believes De Gea has more than demonstrated his quality at United over the years and he should relish the chance to play in another top league in Europe.

Speaking to German publication Bild, Matthaus said: "I would go to De Gea as Bayern Munich. And in De Gea's place to Bayern.

"This shouldn't be about money: the chance for him to play for a top European club is a huge, great challenge. I don't know if he could switch to another club
