David de Gea reveals how he saved Aleksandar Mitrovic penalty in Manchester United vs Fulham

David de Gea was determined to save Aleksandar Mitrovic's penalty to help Manchester United finish the season strongly at the weekend.

Fulham took an early 1-0 lead on Sunday afternoon and they had the opportunity to extend their advantage shortly after scoring when United midfielder Casemiro conceded a penalty after bringing down Tom Cairney in the area with a clumsy challenge.

Mitrovic, who picked up an eight-match ban when last playing at Old Trafford, stepped up to take the penalty, but De Gea dived the correct way and saved the spot-kick.

It was De Gea's first penalty save at Old Trafford since he denied Leighton Baines in October 2014 and he celebrated the stop.

The goalkeeper spoke to MUTV after the game and he admitted he felt positive when Mitrovic was preparing to take the penalty.

"We conceded the first goal from a corner and I think five minutes after we conceded a penalty and I think I was very positive," he said. "I was feeling like 'I have to save this penalty because we need to end the season properly at home and win'.

"Then I made the save, everyone was happy, enjoying and I helped the team win the thee points. Like always, you prepare for penalties, but you never know, sometimes it's 50/50, but it was a good save.

"I kept the team in the game with the 1-0 and we scored two great goals to win the game."

De Gea is out of contract next month but an announcement on his new extension is expected imminently.
