David de Gea aims dig at Roy Keane with social media reply to Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes

David de Gea has hit back at Roy Keane and Gary Neville’s suggestions that Bruno Fernandes is not up to the task of being Manchester United captain with a sarcastic social media comment.

The playmaker’s status as Reds skipper has been questioned following defeats to Manchester City and Newcastle, but Erik ten Hag has underlined his support of Fernandes after he grabbed a late winner against Fulham on Saturday.

Speaking after the derby defeat last Sunday, Keane - often a critic of De Gea during his time at United - said he would strip Fernandes of the captaincy, claiming he is not “captain material”.

He added: "Fernandes is a brilliant footballer. In terms of captain material, he is the opposite to what I would want in a captain."

Neville concurred with Keane later in the week, mooting that Fernandes may be best giving up the captaincy so he can concentrate on his own game. Neville said: “I don’t think to start with he should have been made captain.

“It was quite clear when you were watching him when [Cristiano] Ronaldo was there when you’re watching him towards the middle of last season, it was obvious that he wasn’t the perfect captain for the group – but I think he is the best player in the team and I think he’s our most valuable player.”

He added: “I think, to be fair, if he had anything he’d get to the end of the season and he’d say, ‘Look, captaincy isn’t for me,’ is what I would think.”
