David Beckham has outlined why he chose to bring Lionel Messi to Inter Miami earlier this summer, marking one of the biggest transfers the MLS has ever seen.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner recently spent time with French giants PSG from 2021-2023, after calling time on his decorated spell with Barcelona, with financial hardship resulting in the La Liga side failing to agree fresh terms upon the expiration of his contract.

Having already claimed his first piece of silverware in the US, Miami still have an outside chance of making the playoffs this year, with the likes of Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets also linking up with their former Barca team-mate stateside.

Speaking on The Overlap's 'Stick to Football' Podcast recently, the former Manchester United star opened up on how the move to bring Messi to Inter Miami came about, detailing the exact reasoning behind his team's approach.

''When I started this journey 10 years ago, announcing that I was starting a team in Miami, my vision was always to bring the best players," he said. "I suppose as an owner of a team, you always want to bring in the best players, but the chance of bringing in the best, is difficult and always challenging.

''But then, I snuck into Messi’s dad’s hotel about four years ago in Barcelona for a meeting with him and obviously, at that point, we weren’t ready to bring him in and he wasn’t ready to come.
