Dartford captain Tom Bonner retires from football: Former Cambridge United, Dover Athletic and Ebbsfleet United defender calls time on playing days

Dartford captain Tom Bonner has decided to retire from football.

The 35-year-old centre-back has enjoyed an incredible 10 seasons at Dartford but has decided to stop playing in what he described as “the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make”.

Darts boss Alan Dowson wanted Bonner to stay at the club for a further 12 months but now has to rebuild the heart of his defence as his captain called time on the same day Connor Essam’s expected move to Faversham Town was confirmed.

“All good things come to an end,” said Bonner. “I’ve decided the time has come to hang up my boots.

“Ten seasons at Dartford, captaining the club for over six years and making over 450 starts is something I’m incredibly proud of. Thank you for all the memories.

“This has by far been the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make but the time is right for me to have a new focus in my life.

“Thank you to all the clubs, managers and team-mates I’ve had the privilege of playing with and working for. The memories, lessons learnt and times I’ve had will stay with me forever.

“Most of all I want to thank my family for always being there through the good times and bad.

“I’m excited for the next chapter in my life but I know nothing will come close to the feeling of playing in front of you fans. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and I can hold my head high. Just know I gave it everything to you.”

Bonner has been awarded a testimonial by the club, although a date has not yet been set for that game.

After three years with Dartford from 2010, his career also included spells at Cambridge, Dover and Ebbsfleet before he returned to Princes Park in 2016.
