Dartford 0 Charlton Athletic 1: Pre-season friendly crowd of 3,058 saw Rob Apter score the winner and Miles Leaburn miss a penalty for the Addicks
Dartford produced a creditable first display under new player-boss Ben Greenhalgh on Friday night.
The new-look Darts were narrowly beaten by Championship neighbours Charlton Athletic in front of a bumper crowd at Princes Park.
Both teams fielded virtually two different XIs in either half, with Dartford defender George Whitefield the only player to break that trend.
The Addicks missed a 12th-minute penalty when Jordan Higgs fouled Miles Leaburn. The striker took the spot-kick himself but his casual right-footed effort was comfortably saved low to his left by keeper Ryan Sandford.
Chances were hard to come by for Charlton, although Leaburn’s scuffed effort had to be headed clear by Emmanuel Oke as it looked to be heading for the far corner.
The breakthrough came on 31 minutes when the Addicks recycled the ball wide to Rob Apter and he cut inside before beating Sandford low at his near post.
Sandford had to beat away a swerving Ibrahim Fullah drive and the same player was denied again just before the half-time whistle.
After the break, Tyreece Campbell had Charlton’s best openings, with his early shot saved by keeper Carter Sullivan.
Dartford posed more of an attacking threat and nearly levelled just before the hour mark. Greenhalgh’s quick thinking saw a free-kick set up Sam Odaudu, whose cross was headed goalwards by Whitefield and keeper Will Mannion had to produce a fine low save.
Greenhalgh’s 25-yard free-kick went narrowly wide while Charlton nearly added a second but Sullivan saved with his feet after Campbell played a neat one-two on the edge of the area.
