Darren Fletcher's X-rated Man United reaction after West Ham VAR penalty controversy

Manchester United first-team coach Darren Fletcher has, reportedly, launched an X-rated rant after West Ham's controversial penalty on Sunday afternoon.

Erik ten Hag's side largely dominated the first half in London, but they were wasteful in front of goal, once again. United were then punished in the second half as Crysencio Summerville put the Hammers 1-0 up.

But Casemiro equalised soon after to give United hope they could secure just a fourth Premier League victory of the season. However, United's joy was short-lived after referee David Coote was sent to his pitch-side monitor to review Matthijs de Ligt's challenge on West Ham striker Danny Ings.

VAR official Michael Oliver instructed Coote to award a penalty - which was subsequently converted by Jarrod Bowen - and Fletcher's reported reaction typified United's frustration amid more VAR controversy.

"One week it's a high threshold, next week it's not, f***ing joke," he reportedly said as per The Athletic's reporter Laurie Whitwell, while watching the game alongside analysts in the stands.

Asked post-match about the controversial penalty decision, United manager Ten Hag said: "First of all, in football not always the best team win - and today it was clear and obvious - and clear and obvious was not how the VAR worked... how they run their process.

"Before the season, they explained the process of the VAR and only when it's clear and obvious then they should interfere. What they didn't do against Spurs, where they should have done, to interfere with the red card of Bruno [Fernandes], that was a wrong decision and now they make a wrong decision interfering.
