Dapo Afolayan's verdict on coming off bench to score Bolton Wanderers winner vs Peterborough United

Dapo Afolayan believes Bolton Wanderers deserved the win over Peterborough United and was pleased to kick off his goalscoring account in League One this season with the winner in the encounter.

Wanderers hosted Posh at the University of Bolton Stadium and went close to taking the lead in the first half when Gethin Jones headed against the post. Conor Bradley had earlier seen a good chance go wide.

After the break, Dion Charles curled over from outside the box, while Jack Iredale also saw an effort saved. But Wanderers went ahead thanks to Afolayan as his deflected effort bounced over the line to deliver the hosts a valuable three points.

Wanderers remain fifth in the table but have consolidated their place in the top six with the victory. They are four points from top spot as things stand.

After Afolayan came off the bench to score the winner, he admitted there was a degree of luck to his strike going in, but he will take it by all means. He was his first goal of the League One season.

Afolayan has not started a game since the loss to Sheffield Wednesday last month and has had to be patient and put in the work to get his chance on the pitch. He is glad to have got that and feels it is has been a decent start to the new campaign.

He said: “I think I have scored better goals than that… but it’s good for the three points.

“The team deserved it, the boys were excellent. So to bring me, Jon, Sadlier and Baka off the bench shows we have got a strong squad and we are all contributing.

“When I came on it felt like the game had become quite open. The lads at the back were having a right barney but I just wanted to get into it.
