Danny McGuire's confession as Hull KR close in on finishing above FC again

The message from everyone involved in Hull KR is pretty clear in that not finishing in the play-offs would be considered a failure. But if that wasn't to happen, and that's now looking increasingly likely, there is at least the consolation prize of finishing above the other club in the city.

With three rounds to go, Rovers are perched one place above Hull FC due to a slightly superior points difference, leaving Danny McGuire's side with a very real chance of finishing above their arch-rivals for a second season running.

Last year was the first time since 2014 that KR had finished higher than FC and though it wouldn't be considered a success should they not do it with a top six finish to their name, it would at least be a consolation prize.

McGuire admits the matter isn't at the forefront of his mind, but acknowledged the importance to the fans.

"I get it and we've got to have that understanding of what it means to the fans," he said. "So I'm not going to play that down and say it's not important because I think it is.

"In the bigger picture, we'd like to be higher and like to be more set in the play-offs. If we're honest we've probably underachieved a little bit there but circumstances have happened. It would be nice to finish above the other side of the city and for everyone at the club it would be nice."

As it stands, there's a strong likelihood that the bragging rights will remain up for grabs on the final day of the season, when the two clubs go head-to-head.
