Danny Cowley's Portsmouth already know what to expect at Sheffield Wednesday after Coventry test

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley believes defeat to Championship opposition on Saturday afternoon was the prefect preparation for the start of League One next weekend.

Coventry City visited Fratton Park in the team's final pre-season friendly and won 2-0 thanks to goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Joe Panzo. Loanee goalkeeper Josh Griffiths produced a display in which he saved a penalty from former Pompey loanee Tyler Walker late on and made a number of key saves through the game to show why he is so highly rated at parent club West Bromwich Albion.

Despite the loss, Cowley made an astute observation after the final whistle when he pointed out that Sheffield Wednesday, the club's first opponents in League One next Saturday, will play the same formation as the Sky Blues did.

“It was a great test for us against a well coached Coventry side playing in a back-three which is what we anticipate next week at Hillsborough," Cowley told the club's official website. "They've been together together for a long time and you can see that in terms of their organisation and the way that they play.

"For us, you can see that we are quite new in the nature of bringing players in, the dynamics changed slightly. The first half we were really really good, I thought our organisation against the ball was was excellent. We stopped a really good team playing through us, we had really good control in that first half.

"Naturally goals change games and I think the first from our free-kick, we lose possession and they score on the counter. We then have some good chances, we don't take those chances and then we give a poor second goal away from a defensive set-piece and then I think you saw Coventry find their rhythm in the game.
