Daniel Levy's 'mistake' verdict on Jose Mourinho will ring true for some at Manchester United

Manchester United supporters looking back on Jose Mourinho's spell in charge will likely remember the Portuguese manager for his trophies and little else.

United's decision to sack Louis van Gaal just two days after he won them the FA Cup in 2016 suggested those in charge at Old Trafford were wanting more than just silverware from their manager. The Dutchman got a famous win at Wembley but his football was turgid.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, United fans were spoiled with 27 years of winning major honours, doing so playing exciting and attacking football. Academy graduates were in abundance throughout and those who arrived later on were still able to forge relationships with their supporters.

But since the Scot's retirement a decade ago, finding that magic combination has proven impossible. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revived the bond but won nothing, while Van Gaal brought trophies to Old Trafford but was rarely liked.

It was hoped that the Mourinho they hired would be the first edition of Chelsea Mourinho, intoxicatingly confident and charismatic. They instead got the cynical version.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview about Tottenham earlier this week, Daniel Levy - who was next to employ Mourinho after his United sacking - made a rare admission regarding his decision.

"I had a good relationship with both Jose and Antonio [Conte]," Levy told Bloomberg. "They're different, and as I said in my fan forum last night [Wednesday], I made a mistake.

"They are great managers, they were just not right for this club. The way they want to win is different from how we need to win."
