Dangerous, dubious and daring: The Nedbank Cup's weird and wacky club names

The magic of a football association cup tournament like the Nedbank Cup is that there aren't just surprises with results, but also some of the names of the teams.

While the DStv Premiership and GladAfrica Championship sides have remained consistent with their names over the years, there have been some interesting entries.

The early stages of the 2008 Nedbank Cup that was won by Mamelodi Sundowns, who'll be facing the tricky named Mathaithai FC on Tuesday evening, saw a team called Inspection FC take part.

However, they didn't advance past the Round of 32 as 2011 Nedbank Cup finalists Black Leopards got in the way.

Here are some weird and wacky names that have graced the Nedbank Cup:

Mathaithai FC (Free State)

The Free State-based ABC Motsepe side ought to be tricky to play again if they can be judged on their name.

Mathaithai is a colloquial term across many of South Africa's languages for "tricky customers or the ones who are prone to cheating).

There was nothing shady in how they moved past Northern Cape Professionals in the last 32, but they'll be fully aware of a Sundowns side that's generally merciless when it comes to dealing with lower-league teams.

Dangerous Darkies (Mpumalanga)

They were part of SA football in two parts in the early 1990s before they joined up with Mpumalanga Black Aces.

They returned in the early 2000s and campaigned in the lower leagues. Their name though would be one that would be difficult to digest nowadays without inciting anger from some quarters of society.

Powerlines FC (Northern Cape)

They were supposed to provide some electricity to the 2012 Nedbank Cup, but they badly short-circuited at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns.
