Damon Heta beats Michael Van Gerwen to reach Grand Slam of Darts last-eight

Damon Heta battled past three-time champion Michael Van Gerwen 10-7 to book his place in the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

Dutchman Van Gerwen was made to pay for some sloppy finishing as the Australian fought back from 4-2 down to edge in front at 6-4.

Although Van Gerwen managed to stay in touch during the later stages, Heta was left with the darts for the match, which he clinched when taking out 80 on double top.

Heta, who saw off Beau Greaves in their Group H decider to make the knockout stage, goes on to play Rob Cross who edged out last year's runner-up Nathan Aspinall 10-8.

Cross was never behind as he came through a high-quality contest against World Matchplay winner Aspinall, finishing with an average of almost 104 having landed seven maximums.

In the opening last-16 match of the evening, American Stowe Buntz continued his dream run with a 10-5 victory over UK Open champion Andrew Gilding.

Buntz - who had beaten Peter Wright and Stephen Bunting in the group stage - never looked back after racing into a 5-0 lead.

The American will face Bunting again in the last eight after the Bullet checked out on 121 with a bullseye to defeat Danny Noppert 10-4 - which was a first loss for the Dutchman after his clean sweep in Group F.

The quarter-finals will also feature Antrim's Josh Rock who will face James Wade after beating Krzysztof Ratajski 10-5 on Wednesday.
