Damien Garcia deals Rangers a transfer blow as Penarol star makes major career call

Damian Garcia won't be joining Rangers with the Penarol midfielder set to sign a new contract.

The 20-year-old had been lined with a move to Ibrox as Philippe Clement looks to reshape his midfield. .John Lundstram and Ryan Jack have both left Ibrox under freedom of contract, and while Mohamed Diomande has signed on a long-term basis, the Belgian is still seeking reinforcements in the Light Blues' engine room.

Garcia was entering the final six months of his contract and was seen as potential new recruit that Gers could develop and perhaps make a future profit on. But the Uruguayan giants were always keen to hang on to Garcia and after initial talks stalled over a new deal, DS Sports now report that the player is set to sign an extension until December 2026, earning himself a healthy payrise in the process and putting paid to any Rangers interest for now.

The Scottish League Cup winners will now turn their attentions to Connor Barron. The former Aberdeen star left Pittodrie this summer when his contract expired and is now expected to undergo a medical with the Ibrox club.
