Damien Duff: Zurich masterclass a wake-up call for Shels

Playing a side as formidable as FC Zurich is a reminder that Shelbourne staff and players alike must strive to reach higher levels, says manager Damien Duff.

The League of Ireland table-toppers were outclassed 3-0 in the first leg of their second round tie in the UEFA Conference League at the Stadion Letzigrund in Switzerland.

Having fallen behind in the opening 30 seconds, two goals from Marchesano wrapped up a convincing win for the hosts who will look to complete the job at Tolka Park next week.

Having played against the likes of Arsenal and PSV in the Europa League just two years ago, Zurich were always likely to be a tall order for the Dublin outfit, but Duff says that playing against such quality opposition should only raise their own standards.

"We've lost 3-0 to, you could say, a brilliant team," he said.

"I might think I’m a half-decent manager, or half-decent coach. I promise you I don’t, but if I was to think that, it’s sobering.

"I can be better, the staff can be better. The players might think, 'I’m big, I’m strong, I’m quick, I’m technical’, well we saw levels tonight.

"When we’re all back home, I can't disrespect how I work, the players can’t disrespect a gym session, a speed session, a technical session with the ball.

"That’s why I love nights like this, it always shows us we can do better, but I couldn’t be any prouder of the lads.

"There is nothing for them to be disappointed about. We’ll absolutely have a good crack off them next Thursday."
