Daizen Maeda sees Celtic no goal get unanimous verdict as key ball out VAR call finds Hibs 'vantage point'

Celtic have been told that Daizen Maeda's second strike against Hibs was correctly chalked off by VAR.

It was a poor showing from the Scottish Premiership leaders as they slumped to defeat at Easter Road thanks to Josh Campbell's double as they returned a meek showing in the wake of their Champions League departure at the hands of Bayern Munich earlier this week despite Maeda's second half strike. Hibs piled the misery on after their heartbreak at the Allianz Arena with David Gray 's men taking their unbeaten run to 13 games and moving into the top four in the table.

However, things could have been very different for the Hoops had Maeda levelled in the closing stages at Easter Road. Alistair Johnston rushed to keep a pass from Nicolas Kuhn from going out for a goal kick - and would square the ball for the goalscorer to find the net again.

Referee Steven McLean and the on-field officials would initially award the goal - before Alan Muir and the team in the VAR room chalked it off for a factual call with the ball being deemed to have gone out of play before the Canadian international crossed the ball. John Collins told BBC Sportsound: "Instantly I thought it was out of play. I think the linesman was in a good position I'm surprised he didn't spot it."

Pat Nevin chimed: "I think to be fair he went to raise his flag and put it back down. That is why the good Lord invented VAR."

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon added on Premier Sports co-commentary: "It looks just out, but it's so tight. I did think here from this vantage point it was just out."
