Cumbernauld Colts youngsters are chasing historic treble triumph

Cumbernauld Colts Under-18s are chasing a historic treble on Sunday, but have already secured the ‘Holy Grail’ with the Scottish Youth FA Cup.

The young Colts won their Scottish Youth FA League Division A without dropping a single point, and tomorrow will clash with Giffnock in the Divisional Cup final.

That’s adding to the Scottish Youth FA Cup, which they won after beating Aberdeen’s Westdykes Community 2-0 at Airdrie’s New Broomfield stadium on May 22.

Secretary/coach Michael Moncur says this is one of the best under-18 sides in the club’s history, and the first to reach, and win, the Scottish Youth FA Cup.

He said: “The Scottish Cup is the ‘Holy Grail’. It’s not one that a lot of boys or coaches experience at youth level, so it was great to be part of the journey and the day.

“It was the first time that both clubs had reached the final, and that probably added a little bit of an edge to the game.

“It was a good, fair final, they pushed us for the first 10-15 minutes, as most teams do, because most teams have a go at us, but we weathered the storm and wore them down just by playing football.

“Then we scored the two goals and took control of things.

“This is the best team I’ve been involved with, potentially one of the stronger ones within the Colts’ history, and certainly the first to win the Scottish Cup, so they’re certainly up there.”

Moncur says it has been a good season, with coach Stuart McLachlan making a big difference.

He said: “It’s a good group of boys, a good set of coaches and it has worked out well.

“There are a lot of good, committed and focused boys, they have a great coach in Stuart McLachlan, who is a ‘Grade C’ UEFA licensed coach, and he has made the difference, undoubtedly.
