Cullen & McCabe scoop Player of the Year awards

Josh Cullen has been crowned the FAI's men's senior player of the year, with Katie McCabe scooping the women's honour.

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was named the men's young player of the year, while Conor Coventry took the U-21s gong.

Cullen and Bazunu were presented their awards by Paul McGrath during a special ceremony at the team hotel on Monday night.

Ireland are currently preparing for Thursday's friendly against Norway at the Aviva Stadium.

Cullen, who followed boss Vincent Kompany to Burnley from Anderlecht is July, is rewarded for a string of quietly influential displays for Stephen Kenny's team. He's nailed down his place in the middle of the park thanks to an impressive level of consistency.

Bazunu also turned in some eye-catching displays for his country. The talented stopper earned a summer move to Southampton from Manchester City in another progressive year.

Meanwhile McCabe helped Ireland to a 4-0 friendly victory over Morocco in Spain on Monday, converting an early penalty as the Girls in Green wrapped a memorable year.

The Arsenal star was tremendous as Vera Pauw's side sealed a historic first qualification for the World Cup with a play-off win against Scotland.

Coventry suffered heartache with the U-21s when they lost their Euros play-off on penalties in September, but the midfielder's excellence throughout the campaign was inarguable.

He's also started to knock on the door of first-team action at West Ham, with club boss David Moyes recently backing him to break into Kenny's squad.
