Crystal Palace: Patrick Vieira could have his own John Terry at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi possesses similar attributes to John Terry, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

Guehi was only handed his Premier League debut back in August but he has already caught the eye in his maiden top-flight campaign.

The 21-year-old has started all but one of Palace’s league games this term, and has helped his side keep eight clean sheets under Patrick Vieira.

He has even been given the captain’s armband on multiple occasions in recent weeks, highlighting how Vieira has plenty of faith in the youngster.

He is not the only one as Gareth Southgate has rewarded him by picking him in his latest England squad ahead of more experienced players such as Eric Dier and Fikayo Tomori.

Guehi could be in line to make his Three Lions debut later this month when England take on Switzerland and Ivory Coast in friendlies at Wembley.

Some may be shocked by Guehi’s call-up, but Barclay has suggested that it is fully warranted, and has compared the centre-back to Terry, who won 78 international caps during his glittering career.

Reflecting on Guehi’s season, Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s only been improving. He’s forming a good relationship with Joachim Andersen. He’s never been blessed with rapid pace, but his understanding of the game has really helped him on that front.

“I’m not surprised that John Terry is his idol. When you consider the similarities, John Terry didn’t have a lot of pace but his reading of the game nullified that problem.”
