Crystal Palace: Major update reveals Southgate's stance on Tyrick Mitchell
Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell narrowly missed out on being named in Gareth Southgate’s original squad, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.
Following a number of withdrawals, including Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the young left-back was rewarded for his impressive campaign with a call up for the upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.
Mitchell joins Eagles teammates Marc Guehi and Conor Gallagher in the Three Lions squad, with this his first call up at any level with England.
Mitchell’s recognition tops off what has been an outstanding first full season as a Crystal Palace regular.
Not just in terms of English players, but the 22-year-old has been one of the standout left-backs in the whole of the Premier League.
Having stepped up in the absence of Patrick van Aanholt, who moved on last summer, Mitchell has played all-but eight minutes in the Premier League this season, chipping in with two assists, and has established himself as Patrick Vieira’s first choice left-back.
According to WhoScored, Mitchell has been Palace’s best defender this term, with only Gallagher, James McArthur and Wilfried Zaha outperforming him in the entire squad.
Therefore, when asked about his eventual call up to the squad, Bridge believes that with Kieran Trippier and Ben Chilwell out injured, Mitchell wasn’t far off being picked in the first place.
He told GIVEMESPORT: “I was told that he was extremely close to getting picked in the original squad.”
