Crystal Palace 'definitely in good position' to sign £40m star at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace are in a good position to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher if he becomes available in future windows, having failed to bring him back to Selhurst Park in the summer, according to Tom Barclay of The Sun.

Patrick Vieira oversaw a busy few months of business in south London but ultimately failed in one of the primary transfer objectives.

According to The Times, they submitted a £27 million bid for the 22-year-old late in the transfer window but it ultimately failed.

It was understood that Palace had hoped the prospect of regular football in the build-up to the World Cup would be enough to tempt him back to the club.

Newcastle United were also interested, with The Sun reporting that the midfielder became their top priority, with Chelsea slapping a £40 million price tag on his head.

David Moyes wanted to bring Gallagher to the London Stadium, however, as the Scot looked to add more energy to his West Ham side.

But he remained at Chelsea beyond the deadline and has endured an eventful start to the season.

Gallagher has started three of the club’s last four games, missing the 2-1 defeat to Southampton after picking up a red card against Leicester City.

Barclay understands that, if Gallagher were to become available, Palace would stand a good chance of winning the race for his signature.

The journalist adds that the player’s past experience with the club is bound to give them an edge over their rivals for his signature.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “Crystal Palace would definitely have been in for him. They were hoping that he might become available on loan towards the end of the window. The fact that he did so well under Patrick Vieira would definitely put them in a good position to get him.”
