Crystal Palace and England star Eberechi Eze watches his brother play for Dartford against Gillingham and reunites with former manager Gareth Ainsworth
England international Eberechi Eze was in the crowd watching the pre-season friendly between Dartford and Gillingham.
The Crystal Palace and England star - linked this summer with a move to Arsenal - could be a regular at Dartford when time allows, after his older brother Ikechi signed for Ady Pennock’s Isthmian Premier Division side this summer.
For Gills boss Gareth Ainsworth, Eze was a welcome face in the crowd at Princes Park.
Ainsworth managed a young Eberechi Eze at Wycombe Wanderers and there were warm embraces at the end of the game when the pair were reunited.
Gills manager Ainsworth said: “I firmly believed in that boy and took him on loan from QPR after watching him in a youth game.
“He still remembers. He came up to me and said, ‘Thanks gaffer for all you've done for me’. It's amazing to hear that from somebody who's gone on to achieve as much as he has.
“He's a fantastic footballer and England are very lucky to have him.
“We had some great days back at Wycombe, and he remembers them, which is nice, because he's gone on to achieve so much.
“It's brilliant that he remembers the time together.”
Dartford signed Ikechi Eze, 28, this summer after he’d been playing for Aveley and then Potters Bar Town the season before.
He’s recently played in Scotland, for Clydebank and Stranraer, and before that closer to home with appearances for the likes of Hampton & Richmond and Fisher Athletic.
Another familiar face was in the crowd last week at Ebbsfleet United, with former So Solid Crew lead member Harvey watching his nephew Lennon Peake play and score against the Gills.
Gillingham won Saturday’s friendly against Dartford 2-0 with Joe Gbode scoring both goals.
