Cryptic: 'Top' player appears to end Tottenham's hopes of signing him in Instagram post
GiveMeSport recently relayed comments from Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, who appeared to suggest that the £9m-rated goalkeeper would be on his way out of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite being an “immensely popular” figure within the squad.
The Italian was brought in on loan from Atalanta by Nuno Espirito Santo with the hope that he could succeed Spurs captain Hugo Lloris, however, he hasn’t exactly enjoyed his spell in north London, making just 10 appearances.
Now, taking to Instagram, the 27-year-old looks to have confirmed his departure, saying: “It’s been a pleasure.”
Interestingly, it has been reported that Spurs want to sign the goalkeeper, who Hugo Lloris described as a ‘top man’, on a permanent deal.
This news would appear to suggest that Spurs are indeed on the lookout for another potential backup for Lloris, with West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone the name most mentioned.
However, a report from The Athletic on Sunday appeared to suggest that the north London club had been overtaken in the race for the 3-cap England international’s signature.
The Times had previously listed the Lilywhites as the ‘frontrunners’ for the Baggies player, who is out of contract this summer, but it seems as if it won’t be a straightforward acquisition.
Either way, it certainly looks that Spurs will be on the hunt for another goalkeeper with Gollini all but announcing his exit, but it does remain to be seen whether or not they can secure the signing of a goalkeeper who made the most saves (166) in the Premier League during the 2020/21 season.
