Crowds turn out in Kerry to welcome All-Ireland champions home

The victorious Kerry football team have been attending homecoming celebrations in Tralee and Killarney with tens of thousands of their supporters.

Jack O'Connor's side claimed their 38th All Ireland title following a 0-20 to 0-16 win over Galway at Croke Park yesterday.

More than 10,000 people attended the homecoming celebration at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney, where the team trained and prepared for this year's All-Ireland.

Each of the players was introduced to the crowd there.

Earlier in Tralee, the team, management and backroom staff were driven through crowds who lined the streets of the town to a reception at the Ashe Memorial Hall.

Jack O'Connor, in his third stint as Kerry manager, said the support the team received this year - particularly in the All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin - was unparalleled.

He thanked supporters for their passion for Kerry football and said the reception the team received was "amazing".

Joint Kerry captain Joe O'Connor, of the Austin Stacks club in Tralee, also thanked his home supporters.

"It was so, so special to go up the steps (of the Hogan Stand) to receive the cup with Seanie (O'Shea)," he said. "It's been a long eight years, so we are delighted to bring Sam back here."

Sean O'Shea added: "To be here today and see this crowd is unbelievable."

He paid tribute to Galway, and said there was great respect between the two counties.

The team are now attending a reception at Killarney's Gleneagle Hotel.

They will bring the Sam Maguire Cup on tour to O'Connor's club Austin Stacks tomorrow night and to O'Shea's Kenmare club on Wednesday night.
