Cristiano Ronaldo: When Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez trolled Man Utd superstar in 2021

Emiliano Martinez once proved the ultimate wind-up merchant when Manchester United were awarded a last-minute penalty in their Premier League clash with Aston Villa.

The Villans were underdogs heading into the encounter at Old Trafford but found themselves 1-0 up in the dying minutes of the match after Kourtney Hause headed home from a Douglas Luiz corner.

Man Utd got the opportunity to rescue a point, though, when referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot for a clumsy handball in injury time.

Villa fans surely feared the worst given the ultra-reliable Cristiano Ronaldo was on the pitch.

But to the surprise of many, it was in fact Bruno Fernandes that stepped up to take the penalty.

It's not often you see Ronaldo let a teammate take such an important set-piece, and given his reputation in pressure situations, one would have presumed Martinez would have been over the moon to see him far away from the ball.

But the Argentine instead started shouting at Ronaldo that he wanted him to take it, gesturing to the spot as he bellowed.

It could well have been an incredibly ingenious tactic to get into the head of Fernandes, who was stood directly in front of Martinez whilst he was shouting.

And if it was, it paid off perfectly because Fernandes duly stepped up and uncharacteristically blasted his attempt straight into row Z.
