Cristiano Ronaldo surpasses another Champions League record despite Manchester United defeat

Cristiano Ronaldo has set another Champions League record — despite Manchester United crashing out to Spanish opponents Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

Having completed a grand return to Old Trafford last summer, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has scored 18 goals this season and produced several magical moments during the group-stage of the marquee European competition. However, there will be no further glory for Ronaldo and United in the short-term.

A winner from Renan Lodi sealed a 1-0 win for Atletico on the night, and a 2-1 aggregate victory, which means United can no longer win a trophy this season. It's coming up five years since they last got their hands on any silverware.

Ultimately, Ronaldo's comeback season at Old Trafford has not gone to plan. In addition to that individual goals tally, though, the records continue to tumble and that was the case against familiar foes Atletico.

Flanked by Anthony Elanga and Jadon Sancho in attacking quarters, the Portuguese sensation was handed a 183rd appearance in the competition. While that is already more than former Real Madrid teammate Iker Casillas, Ronaldo has now played more minutes than the Spanish goalkeeping icon.

From those 183 outings, the United striker has totted-up 15,938 minutes. That's 31 more than Casillas accumulated.
