Cristiano Ronaldo sends emotional thank you message to Manchester United and Liverpool supporters

Cristiano Ronaldo has shared an emotional message with Manchester United and Liverpool supporters after their moving tribute to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner and his family. Ronaldo was unavailable for United at Anfield on compassionate leave following the tragic death of his newborn son.

In his absence, United were humbled by the title-chasing rivals. However, for matters bigger than football, it was a game which provided a moment of solidarity in the seventh-minute when fans from both teams joined together in applause for Ronaldo and his heartbroken family.

Putting on-field rivalries to one side, the gesture was prompted by Liverpool fans and carried out amid emotional scenes once the Premier League action got underway. United had previously led condolences for Ronaldo as other key figures and players reached out to him and his family after their devastating news.

Players from both teams also wore black armbands at Anfield on Tuesday night. It came after Ronaldo and partner Georgina Rodriguez announced the tragic death of their newborn son. Georgina gave birth to twins on Monday and their baby daughter arrived safely.

Addressing his 430million followers on Instagram, Ronaldo - alongside prayer emojis and a video of the moment fans applauded - said: "One world. One sport. One global family. Thanks, Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion."
