Cristiano Ronaldo has already delivered his verdict on Matthijs de Ligt as Manchester United edge closer to signing the Bayern Munich defender.

United are understood to have agreed to a £51.5 million deal for Bayern Munich duo De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, who were scheduled to complete medicals on Monday. They are set to be the third and fourth additions to Erik ten Hag's squad this transfer window, following the arrivals of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.

De Ligt, who was managed by Ten Hag at Ajax, became the Dutch club's youngest-ever captain and steered them to Eredivisie glory and a Champions League semi-final. The centre-back joined Juventus in 2019 but shortly before sealing his switch to Serie A, De Ligt was head-hunted by Ronaldo after that summer's Nations League final in an attempt to rubber-stamp his move to Turin.

Upon completing his move to Italy, De Ligt said: "After the final, I was already sure I wanted to join Juve. It was a big compliment to have Ronaldo ask me to join but it didn't make the difference."

Now 25, De Ligt has amassed significant experience since his breakthrough at Ajax and his three-year stint at Juventus. Despite leaving his boyhood club as a teenager, De Ligt displayed the type of mentality that United will expect to enhance Ten Hag's squad.
