It may be a match set to be played in San Diego, but Manchester United’s upcoming pre-season fixture against Wrexham is a game made in Hollywood. Erik ten Hag’s men will come up against Phil Parkinson’s Red Dragons in the Welsh side’s first-ever appearance in the United States.

It is yet another example of the influence that star owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have, including roping the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson into the video announcing the match-up.

Naturally, it’s not very often that the Reds find themselves up against a non-league side, unless faced with a potential cup banana skin. By the time that the current season draws to a close, Wrexham may have re-established themselves in the Football League, with them sitting in first place in the National League at the time of writing. But the news is the perfect opportunity to look at United’s record against the minnows of the footballing world, and it’s not as sparkling as you might expect.

Back in February 1949, Yeovil Town became just the second non-league side to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, earning a tie against United at Maine Road. It turned out to be more than comfortable, with an 8-0 victory coming for the Reds of Manchester.

It certainly wasn’t as easy in 1953, when lowly Walthamstow Avenue earned a famous replay thanks to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Ultimately, the tie would be settled by a 5-2 margin when the sides met again, but this match signalled the tough tests that would face United whenever non-league teams came to call.
