Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea could hand Erik ten Hag his first Manchester United dilemma

With the start of the Erik ten Hag era at Manchester United edging ever closer, thoughts have turned to how the squad could look under the Dutch manager. Fans have been discussing who the club will sign in the upcoming transfer window, but also which players could be set to depart.

On current form, there aren't many players who could confidently say they'll be a part of Ten Hag's plans next season. However, two players who certainly deserve to remain at Old Trafford when you consider their performances this season are Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea. The problem is that neither is particularly suited to Ten Hag's style of play.

Ronaldo has scored 24 goals this season but his link-up play and in-the-box presence haven't been up to scratch - these are two qualities Ten Hag looks for in his strikers. That being said, the Dutch manager claimed in a recent interview that the Portuguese striker still has a part to play.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, Ten Hag said: "Ronaldo is a giant, because of what he's already shown and I think he's still very ambitious. Of course, I would like to keep him. He's been very important to Manchester United this year and can produce great statistics."

But what about De Gea? The Spanish goalkeeper was in great form earlier this season, but towards the end of the campaign his numbers have dropped.

The rest of his game is also very limited. He ranks among the lowest in the Premier League for crosses claimed and actions outside of the penalty area when it comes to cutting out opposition chances. This has led many United fans to describe De Gea as a player who puts out fires rather than prevents them, but now the fires are starting to get out of control.
