Creetown boost title hopes with 4-1 win over St Cuthbert Wanderers

Creetown moved to within two points of league leaders Newton Stewart with a 4-1 win over St Cuthbert Wanderers.

Shay Meragher opened the scoring with John Lowe getting the second, Jason getting one back for Saints before half-time.

But second half goals from David Hughes and Josh Rennie sealed the win for Creetown, who had moved the game from Castle Cary Park to Newton Stewart to make sure it went ahead.

Creetown chief Jamie Adams said: “The main thing was the three points, and we got that. In the end it was quite comfortable.

“Performance wise, it could have been better but at this stage of the season it’s more about the points and the boys did what they needed to do.

“We went 2-0 up and had a few chances to make it three but didn’t take them then they got one back. I think from start to finish, without being at our best, we were still in control.”

Creetown have no game this weekend, with the players being given some time off ahead of Tuesday’s Haig Gordon Cup clash with Dalbeattie Star.

Adams said: “We’ll train Wednesday and Monday, then play Tuesday.

“It’s a long season and a lot of the boys have families or work so they’ll get the weekend off.

“I’ve told them since the start of the season it’s down to them who plays, it’s not really up to me, whoever performs will play.

“Sometimes there’s not much in the decision but if they play well they’ll play.”

St Cuthbert Wanderers manager Ian Clark tried to take the positives from his side giving a good account of themselves against the title challengers.

He said: “The first half we were really good. The lads battled well, we tried to get the ball down and we nullified some of their threats.
