Creetown beaten on opening day despite leading twice against Nithsdale Wanderers

Creetown suffered an opening day defeat as they lost at Nithsdale Wanderers.

David Hughes gave Creetown the lead but that was soon cancelled out by a trialist.

Dean Agnew put the visitors back in front but again Nithsdale fought back with another trialist goal.

The same trialist then completed his hat-trick to put Nithsdale in front at the break, and he extended the advantage in the second half before Ryan Harper sealed a 5-2 win.

Creetown boss Jamie Adams said: “It’s a disappointing result.

“For the first 30 minutes we started quite well and were 2-1 up, but then we didn’t show the character or determination you need when you go to a place like Nithsdale.

“I knew it was going to be difficult – it’s not an excuse but I was missing my keeper, who has been the best in the league for the last few years, my captain and my vice captain.

“I knew how big a task it was going to be. It was a great opportunity for the boys coming in. They did fine for the first 30 minutes but I think a few of them will be disappointed.

“Defensively we were poor, we didn’t win midfield battle and the front three didn’t do enough to win a game. That’s the way football goes, if you’re off it you don’t win games.”

Creetown were due to host Lochar Thistle last night and on Saturday welcome South of Scotland League champs Dalbeattie Star to Castle Cary Park.

Adams added: “We have some great games coming up and the boys looking forward to it.

“Obviously we’ll have fresh faces coming in. We have a good team and a good squad but if any team in the south was missing the boys I was missing on Saturday it would be a big task.
“It’s up to these players to come in to show how big they are for me.”
