'Credit to the players' - Paul Hurst happy with Grimsby Town's Alfreton performance

Paul Hurst was pleased with how his players performed in their 4-0 victory over Alfreton Town, as the Mariners made it three wins from three in pre-season. John McAtee and Luke Waterfall scored in the first half before Stephen Wearne, and Aaron Braithwaite added two more after half-time.

It was another good runout for the Mariners as Hurst utilised his full squad once again. Conditions were tough for the players on what was a hot afternoon in Derbyshire, but Grimsby coped well and controlled the game throughout. It was a balanced performance from Town, and while results in pre-season do not matter as much, Hurst was still content with how his side controlled the game.

Hurst said: “I think we were good in the first half but could have been better. Credit to the players for the way they approached the game on a really warm day. I thought we controlled the game really well and played some good football. We could’ve had a couple more goals, but the ‘keeper made some really good saves.

“We were a little sluggish in the second half, but because of the substitutions and the weather. It was nice that the young lads came on and contributed as well. t is not all about results at this point, but I am delighted to get the win. There were one or two obvious admissions today, but it won’t be a million miles away from how will look on the first day.”

Bryn Morris made his Town debut after his signing was confirmed on Friday, but Kieran Green was not present in the matchday squad. Hurst reiterated that he is still looking for more improvements but won’t rush into anything.

“We still want to bring in some more players,” continued Hurst. “We’ve not got many games to prepare, so it’s all about trying to build relationships within the squad.
