Craig Levein reveals 'horrendous' Hearts error he will stray from in St Johnstone survival bid

Craig Levein has revealed that he bit off more than he could chew when it came to his workload at Hearts - and he won't be doing the same again at St Johnstone.

The newly-appointed McDiarmid Park boss takes over a side that have failed to impress all season. They didn't manage to pick up a single league win under Steven MacLean, incidentally winning their first game whilst caretaker boss Alex Cleland was steadying the ship, but even that win only takes them to within four points of guaranteed safety and there is still much work to be done in Perth.

Levein is an experienced manager who will know the task at hand; two lengthy spells in Gorgie, an equally impressive tenure at Dundee United and the Scotland role have given him more than enough top-flight experience to clamber the Perth-based side out of the abyss.

But it's his second spell with Hearts that had Levein reflecting on NOT what to do as he prepares for a return to management after four years in the wilderness - with the former Jambo admitting that he worked himself too hard at Tynecastle, which is why Andy Kirk has been brought in alongside him.

Levein said: “What I realised at my latter spell at Hearts is trying to do two jobs is extremely difficult, that’s one thing I have learned. The reason I brought Andy [Kirk] with me is he can take some of the load, mainly the day-to-day coaching and give me the chance to spend what energy I have in areas that are the most important.

“I keep talking about having the energy to cope with the demands of the job and I did think that coming into a role in the Premiership and trying to do everything again would just be a horrendous mistake.
